One Week in Western Australia: Best of Perth & Surrounds from $3,049 per person including international flights

The thing that surprises most about Australia’s sunniest capital city is the incredible variety of experiences you can enjoy under its clear blue skies. Here, where the cityscape and natural landscapes live side-by-side, it’s possible to swim with wild dolphins, taste the fruits of WA’s oldest vineyards and spend the evening hopping between the lively small bars of Perth’s laneways, all in a single day. Just a short ferry ride from the city brings you to Rottnest, Perth’s car-free Class A island reserve, where you can snap the best selfie with Australia’s cutest and friendliest mini marsupial, the quokka. You may also spot the rare Australian sea lion, New Zealand fur seals, migrating whales, nesting ospreys and some of the 350+ species of fish that thrive here. Spend the day exploring the seaside port of Freemantle and its unique convict past and venture outback to the Pinnacles Desert - seeing is believing these ancient limestone pillars!

ACCOMMODATION - Intercontinental Perth is located at the heart of Perth's King Street precinct, a diverse cultural, fashion, and art hub. The collective hub of local restaurants and bars is the place to experience the city. Elizabeth Quay is 600 meters from the property. Defining luxury, this property features a fresh and modern design and a uniquely crafted art collection. The contemporary and elegant guest rooms and suites offer breathtaking views of Perth City, modern facilities, a relaxing walk-in rain shower, and luxury amenities.

This afternoon make your way to Elizabeth Quay - Celebrating Perth’s love affair with the Swan River, Elizabeth Quay has transformed the foreshore into a free playground for all ages to enjoy the city’s active lifestyle, abundant sunshine, amazing views, alfresco dining, outdoor markets and lively festival scene. Walk the riverside trail and explore the one and half hectares of inlet, island, landscaped gardens and public art via the striking arched suspension bridge and promenade circuit.

Day 4 - Arcades & Laneways Perth city walking tour
On this tour, over two hours, explore the more than 2.5km of arcades and various lesser-known laneways throughout the city. Due to Perth's warm climate, the city center was built with many arcades to keep shoppers shaded and cool. Through churches, shopping malls, and public areas, these arcades and laneways provide interesting routes for locals to navigate through the city center. Art Deco, ultra-modern, and even faux-Tudor are wonderful parts of the city that you will visit on this tour and learn of their origins and impact on the city. In recent years, some forgotten and underutilized laneways in Perth have been given a new lease on life. Through Government investment, the establishment of small bars and cafes, pop-up cultural events, and a proliferation of street art, these once-ignored places are now hip and happening. It is very easy to spend a couple of leisurely hours exploring these hidden yet bustling/vibrant elements of life in Perth. With plenty of opportunities to grab a coffee on the go, have a tasty treat, or find some awesome places to return to after the tour, your friendly guide will help set you up for an enjoyable adventure through the lesser-known parts of Perth.

Day 5 - Rottnest Island Experience
Cruise to Rottnest Island and receive a guided introduction walk. Then, enjoy cycling around the island at your own pace or taking a guided coach tour to discover its beauty and tranquility. Enjoy lunch at Rottnest Lodge, followed by free time at your leisure. Rottnest Island is lined with 83 of the most beautiful bays and beaches you will ever see, but what it’s really known for is being home to the happiest animal in the world. Quokkas are small marsupials, much like a very tiny kangaroo. Thousands of quokkas call Rottnest their island home and pose for the perfect picture. You’ll also spot dolphins and seals year-round, plus humpback whales from September to December. One of the best ways to see Rottnest is by bike – no cars are on the island. It’s the perfect day trip from Perth, and don’t forget a #QuokkaSelfie is free!

Day 6 - Perth at leisure: Recommend Freemantle for the day
Fremantle and its beautifully preserved 19th century port streetscape, is just a 30-minute drive or train ride from central Perth. Or you can take the scenic route via the Swan River, on a cruise from Barrack Street Jetty.

Head for the Cappuccino Strip to ponder the impossibly long list of morning coffee options before hitting the history trail to World Heritage listed Fremantle Prison. On an insightful guided tour of this maximum security jail you’ll learn of the conditions endured by convicts and the daring escapes during its 136-years of operation. In striking contrast, a visit to the modern architecturally designed Western Australian Maritime Museum gives unique views of some of the most awe-inspiring vessels in maritime history. If you’re visiting on a Friday, Saturday, Sunday or a public holiday, experience the aromas, produce and crafts of Fremantle Markets – shoppers and visitors have been drawn here for more than a century.

Feast on fresh fish and chips at Fremantle’s Fishing Boat Harbour for lunch. It’s been the best place to grab the catch of the day since the early 1900s.Or sample some local handcrafted beers at one of the city’s brew houses, alongside a tasty small bites menu and a lively family-friendly atmosphere.Spend the rest of the afternoon soaking up Freo’s free-spirited attitude – it’s a mecca for artists from the worlds of fashion, music, performing arts, painting, Aboriginal art and sculpture. Explore the boutiques and galleries and check out the calendar of events for arts festivals.

Day 7 - Pinnacles Sunset and Stargazing adventure
This afternoon, depart for the Pinnacles Desert, renowned for its ancient landscape and dark skies. Learn about Aboriginal Astronomy and hear Dreamtime stories of the night sky. While you wait for the stars and planets to appear, enjoy a traditional Australian Barbeque Dinner in the Pinnacles Desert as you watch the sunset over the Indian Ocean. The tour also includes a stop at Lancelin to visit the spectacular sand dunes and experience sand boarding down the giant slopes (optional), a stop at Nilgen Nature Reserve to see wildflowers when in season, and a guided bushtucker/bush medicine walk at Hangover Bay.
