Many years before Queenstown's reputation spread as an adventure resort, the lure of gold and the sheer rugged beauty of the country drew early settlers to this region.
Even today a great deal of this mountainous land remains unspoilt and uninhabited.
Nomad Safaris provides the opportunity to see outback New Zealand as it was when the first pioneers set foot here.
Our safari-equipped 4WD vehicles can take you to areas inaccessible by normal means. No coaches, no crowds. A Nomad Safari is a true off-road adventure for those who choose not to follow the pack.
Nomad Safaris operate with Department of Conservation approval, respect the environment we visit and are actively involved in the care and preservation of these heritage areas.
Skippers Canyon
Visitors to this area never fail to be amazed by both the man-made and natural features of this unusual landscape.
Following the Shotover River valley, the Skippers Road was hacked by hand through solid rock, and clings to sheer cliffsides with breathtaking drops into the river gorge below.
The Skippers Canyon Road was featured in The Discovery Channels 'A Royal Tour of New Zealand' with Prime Minister Helen Clark. It is named as one of the top 25 road trips in the world by the British Automobile Association.
Seffertown
Named after a miner originally from the Crimea, Vasilio Seffer was also a tobacco farmer, wine maker, speaker of seven languages and father of seven children.
More recently the old gold mining settlement of Seffertown was home to another of New Zealand's most colourful characters, Barry Crump.
This trip explores the remains of the old town, a spectacular natural rock chasm and a working underground gold mine.
The journey there is 4WD at its best ; many crossings of the river, steep banks and the boulder strewn valley floor keep the excitement high. Our return is via the 'high road' with stunning views of the snow-capped mountains of high country New Zealand.
Nomad Safaris has the exclusive access rights to this hidden paradise.
Macetown
The history of New Zealand's European settlement began in remote places like this.
A ghost town from the goldrush era, what remains is authentic, from the actual houses the settlers lived in, to the machinery and implements left behind when Macetown was abandoned.
Macetown is an area of spectacular natural beauty and a Department of Conservation reserve because of its historical significance.
A tortuous route originally negotiated on foot and by packhorse, today Macetown is only accessible by off-road vehicle...there are over 50 river crossings en route. The road winds from river level to high above the Arrow Gorge giving ever-changing views and great photo opportunities.
The Land Rover 4WD Experience

Practical tuition puts you in the driving seat to really find out what these machines can do. With one of our trained instructors at your side you will get maximum enjoyment whilst learning valuable off-road driving skills in the comfort and safety of '˜The Best 4x4xFar'.
Safari of The Scenes
When JRR Tolkien created Middle Earth little did he know the magical landscapes of his imagination actually existed, 12,000 miles away from his homeland.
It took Peter Jackson 10 years and millions of dollars to bring Lord of the Rings to life on the big screen. Nomad Safaris have been taking people there every day for the past 20 years. Many of the areas that a Nomad Safaris tour visits provide the spectacular backdrops to much of the action in Peter Jackson's Trilogy.
These are real places; there are no film sets; they are areas of outstanding natural beauty that need no enhancement.
Here it is possible to experience the magical atmosphere captured in the film.
