New Zealand - Lake Wanaka

Click here for map of the Lake Wanaka Region

The crystal-clear waters of New Zealand's fourth largest lake reflect the snow-capped peaks of Mt Aspiring National Park, whose dominant feature is Mt Aspiring, towering above a magnificent glacier-sculpted wilderness. A wide range of attractions and adventure sports is all within reach of Wanaka. Take a scenic cruise on the Lake, sample locally made, exquisite wines, or fish at one of the easily accessible spots. Alternatively, venture into the hills and mountains surrounding Wanaka. Skiing, heli-skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, tramping and climbing are all available in this area

Mt Aspiring National Park
This is the third largest national park in New Zealand, stretching from the dense rainforests of Fiordland across braided river valleys and alpine meadows to the heavily glaciated Southern Alps. The township of Lake Wanaka provides some of the easiest access to the entire Park. Set within the Southwest New Zealand World Heritage Area, this is one of the most spectacular pristine wilderness areas anywhere in the world. The pinnacle of the Park is Mt Aspiring (Tititea is the Maori name), rising elegantly from its flanking glaciers to 3,027 metres/9,924 feet. This is a peak much loved by local and international climbers, and photographers. Visitors don't have to be mountaineers to enjoy the delights of the Park (although any one of a dozen world-class local guides can accompany them to the top). Many gentle walking tracks meander through its open valleys, or visitors can fly overhead and gaze down on golden river flats, forested ridges and spilling glaciers.
